At Wolf Haven International, we believe wolves belong in the wild - not in captivity or under private ownership. After being harassed, hunted, trapped, and poisoned to the brink of extinction, wolves are finally making a comeback and actively repopulating forests, mountains, and prairies across Washington.

The presence of wolves in the environment can produce positive cascading impacts that benefit countless species. However, their presence can also stoke fear among humans, so we must engage communities in a way that cultivates new ideas and understanding about how humans can coexist with wild wolf populations. The Future of Wolves Campaign will help Wolf Haven accomplish this.

To do this, we are embarking on a mission to modernize Wolf Haven’s original, outdated facilities by building a new state-of-the-art treehouse learning center to host our education programs. Wolf Haven has spent decades teaching communities about wolves and coexistence, and the treehouse learning center is the next step in expanding that work for future generations.

Researchers have documented that contemporary American youth increasingly experience a “nature deficit disorder.” According to some studies, youth spend 90% of their time indoors, 7-8 hours in front of a screen, and only 4-7 minutes of unstructured play time outdoors on an average day. They also have fewer opportunities for nature‑based learning and other environmental experiences. Nature education funding & opportunities are particularly limited for students in rural and tribal communities.

Wolf Haven’s new treehouse learning center is a strategic investment in outdoor education that can help us take the above challenges head on through

Accessible learning: an ADA classroom space that reflects the beauty of Wolf Haven’s land and wolves, and the quality of our work.
Immersive experiences: opportunities for students to engage in meaningful outdoor learning experiences that deepen understanding and spark lasting curiosity.
New perspectives: unique views of Wolf Haven’s forest, Mima mound prairie, and wildlife that cultivate awe and empathy.
Lasting impact: a minimum 30-year estimated life span to reach several generations of students and visitors, helping them become the wolf and wildlife conservationists of the future.
Destination location: a striking and photogenic structure that will bring new local, regional, and international interest in Wolf Haven and our mission.

the future

The Future of Wolves Campaign goal is $1,100,000 to build the treehouse, ADA accessible ramp, and install interpretive and educational components! Wolf Haven will work with individual donors, businesses, and private foundations to secure these resources, and thanks to generous supporters, foundations, tribes, and community partners, roughly 75% of the funding has already been raised.

The project has also garnered public support. The Washington state legislators allocated $220,000 in the 2026 capital budget to support construction of the treehouse learning center. Wolf Haven aims to raise the remaining funds needed to complete construction in early 2027. When the campaign is fully completed, a treehouse donor wall will recognize every supporter at the level of $5,000 and up.

Wolves have been missing from the landscape for over 100 years, and we are at a crucial turning point in western Washington to help lay the groundwork for permanent recovery in their natural habitat. At the same time, youth need more opportunities than ever to connect with nature - and what better place than a treehouse to capture and inspire the imagination of youth?
